Economic substance filing deadlines — Cayman, BVI and Jersey
Deadlines: the full filing calendar · the regulation library · practical guides
Two of these three deadlines are not dates at all. Cayman and BVI run off the entity's own financial period, so the deadline moves with the entity. Only Jersey has a fixed calendar date. Each jurisdiction sets its own date. The table below lists every one we hold, with the date its own regulator publishes and a link to it.
What is the economic substance filing?
Economic substance rules require an entity carrying on a relevant activity to show real presence in its jurisdiction: people, premises, spending and local board control. That presence is reported each year. The offshore centres introduced the rules under EU and OECD pressure (Jersey guidance).
What is in the report
The report names each relevant activity, the income from it, and the core income-generating work carried out locally. It confirms board meetings held in the jurisdiction with directors present, and states the people, premises and spending there.
Who files, who prepares, who receives
A relevant entity carrying on a relevant activity files. In a fund structure that is usually the manager or the general partner, not the fund. Fund management is the relevant activity, and the fund itself is normally carved out. The report goes to the local tax authority: the TIA in Cayman, the ITA in the BVI, and Revenue Jersey.
This page carries 3 confirmed deadlines for the economic substance filing, each with the date its own regulator publishes.

Common mistakes
Jersey has no separate substance return: the questions sit in Section 7 of the corporate tax return, so a company that files no tax return files no substance information either. Elsewhere, notification and return are different filings on different dates, and the notification gates the rest. Cayman even splits them: the notification is an annual prerequisite, the return is the substance report itself.
Questions this page answers
When is the Cayman economic substance return due?
The return is due within twelve months after the last day of the end of each financial year. A 31 December year end therefore reports by the end of the following December. There is no single Cayman-wide date, because the clock runs off the entity's own year.
When is the BVI economic substance filing due?
The filing is due within 6 months of the end of the entity's financial period. The ITA extended the filing period until further notice for declarations with financial periods ending in June 2025 and December 2025 (notice of 13 July 2026).
Does Jersey have a separate economic substance return?
No. The substance questions are Section 7 of the Jersey corporate tax return, so the return deadline is the substance deadline. For the prior year of assessment that is 30 November 2026.
Do investment funds file an economic substance return?
Usually not in Cayman, where an investment fund sits outside the definition of a relevant entity. The fund-management business files instead, which puts the return on the manager or the GP.
